In an exciting development that could redefine how we communicate in noisy environments, Voice AI startup Subtle has just launched a new pair of wireless earbuds equipped with advanced noise cancellation technology. These innovative earbuds aim to enhance the clarity of calls and provide accurate transcription for notes, addressing a common challenge many face when trying to communicate amidst background noise.
Unveiled just before the highly anticipated Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, these earbuds are set to hit the U.S. market in the coming months at a price of $199. This purchase includes a year-long subscription to an iOS and Mac application, designed for seamless voice note-taking and effortless interaction with artificial intelligence—without the need to press any buttons. Notably, the earbuds incorporate a special chip that allows users to activate their iPhones even when the device is locked, enhancing usability.
Subtle is positioning itself against a backdrop of competition, particularly with AI-powered dictation applications like Wispr Flow, Willow, Monolouge, and Superwhisper. The company claims that its earbuds will significantly outperform AirPods Pro 3 when paired with OpenAI's transcription model, boasting five times fewer errors in capturing speech.
During a demonstration for TechCrunch, the performance of the voice buds was impressive; they effectively captured audio in a bustling environment. Remarkably, the device also transcribed a voice note accurately while Subtle’s co-founder and CEO, Tyler Chen, spoke in a quiet whisper, showcasing its effectiveness in various situations.
Chen elaborated on the vision behind these earbuds, stating, "There's a noticeable shift towards using voice as a primary interface, which many people are embracing. Interacting through voice can be more intuitive than typing on a keyboard. However, we've noticed that people tend to shy away from using voice when others are nearby. Our noise isolation technology aims to change that by allowing users to engage with a voice interface seamlessly through our earbuds."
In the previous year, other tech companies like Sandbar and Pebble introduced innovative rings for note-taking, highlighting a trend in wearable technology aimed at simplifying communication. With its earbuds and accompanying app, Subtle seeks to consolidate various functionalities—such as dictation, AI conversation, and voice memo capabilities—into one comprehensive package.
Customers can pre-order the earbuds directly from Subtle’s official website, where they are offered in both black and white options.
So far, Subtle has secured $6 million in funding and has collaborated with well-known consumer brands like Qualcomm and Nothing to implement their noise isolation models effectively.
On a related note, TechCrunch is scheduled to host an event in San Francisco from October 13 to 15, 2026, where the latest innovations in consumer technology will be showcased.
