Sixers fall in a tight matchup against the Atlanta Hawks as Tyrese Maxey sits out a second straight game due to illness
ATLANTA (AP) — Dyson Daniels starred with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Onyeka Okongwu contributed 20 points and 15 boards, helping the Hawks hold off Philadelphia 76ers 120-117 on Sunday night.
Quentin Grimes came up just short of forcing overtime when his buzzer-beating three rimmed out, sealing the Hawks’ 15th win of the season.
Daniels shot 13 of 19 from the floor. Vít Krejci added 19 points, and Zaccharie Risacher chipped in 15. For the 76ers, Paul George led with 35 points, VJ Edgecombe added 26, and Joel Embiid finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Philadelphia held the lead only once, 47-46 in the second quarter.
Edgecombe kept the 76ers within reach, scoring 17 in the third as George and Embiid watched from the bench.
The Sixers were without their versatile playmaker Tyrese Maxey for the second straight game due to illness.
Daniels gave Atlanta a 118-114 edge with just over a minute left. Grimes answered with a three, but Embiid secured a crucial defensive rebound, giving Philadelphia one last possession with 41 seconds remaining. A series of three-point attempts fell short, and the Hawks escaped with the win.
