Maidstone Borough Council's Generous Offer: Free Use of Mote Hall for Community Groups (2026)

A generous offer from Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is creating a buzz in Kent! The council is extending an invitation to two lucky community groups or charities to experience the grandeur of Mote Hall, a 1,200-seater sports hall within the Maidstone Leisure Centre, absolutely free of charge.

But here's where it gets controversial... MBC, in collaboration with Maidstone Leisure Trust, is offering this incredible opportunity to just two organizations, each for a single event. The main sports hall, capable of accommodating up to 1,000 standing or seated attendees, usually commands a hire fee of up to £2,100. That's a significant sum for most community initiatives!

David Naghi, the cabinet member for community cohesion and safety, describes Mote Hall as a "fantastic space to bring communities together." And he's not wrong; this hall has the potential to unite people and create memorable experiences.

So, who will be the lucky recipients of this generous offer? The council has outlined some criteria to guide their decision. Priority will be given to groups organizing sporting or cultural events, especially those that might struggle to proceed without the free use of the hall. Not-for-profit events and initiatives supporting young people are also favored. Additionally, organizations that directly benefit the residents of the borough will be given preference.

And this is the part most people miss... Only one application per organization is allowed, and it must be for an event taking place between 1 April 2027 and 31 March 2028. The deadline for applications is midnight on 1 February, so interested groups better act fast!

This initiative is a wonderful way to support community engagement and bring people together. It will be interesting to see who secures this fantastic opportunity and how they utilize the space. What do you think? Who do you think should be given this chance, and why? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
