A mysterious and deadly outbreak of hantavirus aboard an Antarctic cruise ship has sparked a race against time for officials and experts in Argentina. Hantavirus, a rodent-borne disease, has a particularly high incidence in Argentina, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The country is now at the center of an investigation to trace the source of contamination and prevent further spread. Since June 2025, Argentina has reported a significant increase in hantavirus infections, with 101 cases, nearly double the previous year's numbers.
The specific strain involved, the Andes virus, can lead to a severe and often fatal lung disease known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. With a mortality rate of nearly a third of cases in the last year, as reported by Argentina's health ministry, this outbreak is a cause for serious concern.
Cruise Ship Tragedy
Passengers aboard the MV Hondius have tested positive for the Andes virus, with tragic consequences. Three passengers have lost their lives, one is in intensive care in South Africa, and three others were evacuated from the ship. Additionally, a man who disembarked earlier tested positive in Switzerland.
The concern extends beyond the ship, as 23 passengers reportedly disembarked on the island of Saint Helena and have since returned to their home countries, including the US. American passengers are being monitored in several states, although no signs of illness have been reported so far.

Argentina is collaborating with various countries, including Spain, Senegal, South Africa, the Netherlands, and the UK, to detect and manage the virus. They are sending genetic material and testing equipment to aid in this effort. Human-to-human transmission is rare, but limited spread among close contacts has been observed with the Andes strain, highlighting the need for careful monitoring and contact tracing.

Local public health researchers in Argentina suggest that climate change is accelerating the risk of hantavirus spread. Higher temperatures allow rodents carrying the virus to thrive in more places, increasing the likelihood of human exposure to their droppings, urine, or saliva.
Infectious disease specialist Hugo Pizzi emphasizes the impact of climate change on Argentina's tropical transformation, leading to the spread of diseases like dengue, yellow fever, and the proliferation of mice due to new plant seeds. He believes the hantavirus is spreading more rapidly as time goes on.
