Sen Ho, a 25-year-old who works in a stationery store and creates digital illustrations in his spare time, shares this sentiment. He believes that side hustles provide an outlet for creativity and self-expression, allowing him to represent himself as an individual with ambitions, skills, and passions.
The rise of side hustles is also a response to the changing job market. With the tech industry facing layoffs and the art job market struggling due to generative AI, many young Americans are no longer relying on a single job for financial security and career growth. Instead, they are prioritizing flexibility, freedom, and purpose, which a traditional corporate job may not be able to offer.
Mark Valentino, Citizens Bank's president of business banking, explains this shift by saying that Gen Z is thinking in terms of a 'portfolio of careers' rather than a single path. They saw their parents struggle and concluded that they'd rather have more balance. As a result, they are refocusing on their goals and seeking out multiple sources of income.
However, working on side hustles alongside day jobs comes with its own challenges. As Sen Ho notes, he doesn't have much downtime, and his side gig requires him to constantly seek out new clients and promote his work. This can be tiring, but he loves drawing so much that he can't imagine not doing it.

By focusing on managing her energy levels, she has found a better balance that allows her to work best with content creation and podcasting when her mind is relaxed and more creative.

Mark Valentino warns that there will be a big gap in the workforce in the next 10 years, and that corporate employers need to figure out how to attract young people into jobs that offer flexibility, passion, and purpose.
