This exhibition, titled “The Beginning”, is a collaboration between Tourist Club International and Vanguard Newspapers, promising to showcase some of Nigeria’s most extraordinary artistic talents. Fidelis Atumah’s participation is more than just a highlight—it’s a chance for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the powerful, evolving vision of one of Nigeria’s most influential artists. And this is the part most people miss: Atumah’s journey into the arts began at the tender age of four, as he experimented with colors in his father’s studio. His father, Martin Atumah, was a renowned painter and academic, and this early exposure laid the foundation for Fidelis’s lifelong dedication to art. He later formalized his passion with an NCE in Fine and Applied Arts (1986), a B.Ed. in Sculpture (1993), and an MFA in Sculpture (2015).
A master of both sculpture and painting, Fidelis seamlessly blends these disciplines, creating works that are both visually stunning and deeply meaningful. His leadership in the art community is equally impressive, having served as a senior lecturer and Head of the Fine Arts Department at the College of Education, Warri, and as Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), Delta State Chapter. With over thirty exhibitions globally, including notable appearances at the Guinness Art Exhibition in Lagos (2005), the New York Art Expo (2019), and the Street Art Exhibition in Trenton, New Jersey (2020), Atumah’s impact on the art world is undeniable.
But here’s the controversial part: While some artists focus on abstract or contemporary themes, Fidelis Atumah’s work is deeply rooted in African traditional life, drawing inspiration from masquerades, masks, folklore, mythology, and even dreams. His art is a narrative of African identity, spirituality, and history, particularly Nigerian history. Atumah’s philosophy is as profound as his art: “I visualize art as a creative medium of expression resulting in the outburst of moods, feelings, emotions, and passion from the subconscious, recollected in reality within an atmosphere of serenity and tranquility, executed in creative and visual harmony.” His works have been commissioned by notable figures like HRM Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, and prominent art dealers such as Andy Ine of Krabhouse Art Gallery.
The USA Exhibition holds special significance for Fidelis, as it marks his return to the Nigerian art scene after relocating to America in 2019. “I feel elated and fulfilled to be part of this inaugural exhibition,” he shared. “It’s not just an exhibition; it’s a tribute to Uncle Sam Amuka, a man who has inspired and supported the arts in countless ways.”
And this is where it gets emotional: Fidelis will be showcasing three new works, all created in 2025, that reflect Uncle Sam Amuka’s life journey at 90 years old. The first piece, ‘Gratitude’, is an oil on canvas abstraction that celebrates Amuka’s blessings and wisdom. The second, ‘Blessed All Round’, is an abstract expressionist work that emphasizes gratitude to God for all blessings. The third, ‘Death is Inevitable, Life is a Gift, Tomorrow is not Guaranteed’, is a surrealist piece that reminds us to live each day with intention and positivity.
These works are not just art—they’re a testament to the impact Uncle Sam Amuka has had on countless lives. As Fidelis puts it, “Uncle Sam represents impacting lives. He’s a man who will be remembered for touching humanity.”
