Google has unveiled an exciting new feature for its Chrome browser called "Auto Browse," which aims to revolutionize how we interact with the web. This innovative tool, powered by the advanced Gemini 3 generative AI model, is designed to take the reins of your browsing experience, assisting users with various online tasks such as booking flights, searching for apartments, and managing expenses.
The introduction of Auto Browse is part of Google’s broader strategy to weave artificial intelligence deeper into the fabric of Chrome. This follows last year’s launch of the “Gemini in Chrome” mode, which enabled users to pose questions about the content on web pages and glean insights from multiple tabs simultaneously.
Currently, Auto Browse can only be accessed by users in the United States who subscribe to Google’s monthly AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. The company has yet to announce when this feature will become available to free users or in other countries.
This rollout aligns with a larger vision emerging from Silicon Valley about the future of web browsing—one that envisions a world where artificial intelligence takes center stage, potentially reducing the human element significantly. In a demonstration prior to the public release, Charmaine D'Silva, a director of product management at Chrome, showcased how Auto Browse simplifies the online shopping process. She explained, "Instead of trying to remember where I purchased an item and struggling to reorder it, I can now assign that task to Auto Browse within Gemini to help me find and buy jackets." By simply messaging the Gemini sidebar, D'Silva instructed the bot to reorder a jacket from the previous year and to search for any available discount codes before finalizing the purchase.
Once activated, Auto Browse takes control of the Chrome browser, performing automated clicks in its own tab while working to fulfill the assigned task. A disclaimer accompanying the demo version advises users to "Use Gemini carefully and take control if needed," emphasizing that users remain responsible for the actions taken by the AI during these tasks. Although users can delegate browsing tasks to the AI, Google reminds them that they are still accountable for the bot's activities online.
At present, there are limitations on the extent of automation available. Google requires user supervision for more sensitive operations, such as social media interactions and credit card transactions. In these scenarios, the Chrome bot outlines the steps it has taken thus far and prompts the user for permission to proceed.
For anyone eager to try out Auto Browse, it is essential to consider the security implications associated with such automation. Despite Google’s assurances of safety, tools like Auto Browse remain vulnerable to prompt injection attacks, which can manipulate the AI when it encounters malicious websites, leading it to perform unintended actions.

Given the company's history of gradually rolling out new features, it’s reasonable to expect that Auto Browse will become more widely available soon.
