Get ready for an incredible comeback story! The Huskies' epic rally from a 20-point deficit will leave you on the edge of your seat.
In a thrilling Mid-American Conference opener, the Northern Illinois University men's basketball team pulled off an astonishing victory over Central Michigan. Down by 20 points with just over 14 minutes left, the Huskies showed incredible resilience and teamwork to secure a 74-73 win.
Led by Dylan Ducommun, who scored a team-high 18 points, and Gustav Winther, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, the Huskies fought back with determination. Taj Walters and Makhai Valentine also contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively, to the comeback effort.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Huskies' 20-point comeback is their largest since 2014, when they overcame a similar deficit against Maine. This raises the question: Is this team capable of consistently pulling off such dramatic turnarounds?
NIU head coach Rashon Burno had this to say about the game: "You don't know what you have until you're tested. Our guys stuck together, got the stops, and made the free throws. It wasn't about loud plays, but rather a diligent breakdown of Central Michigan possession by possession."
And this is the part most people miss... With just over 9 minutes left, Ducommun started a 9-2 run, cutting Central Michigan's lead to 10 points. The Huskies' defense stepped up, and their offensive rebounds kept them in the game.
With the score at 65-59, Ducommun found Valentine for a dunk, bringing NIU within striking distance. Central Michigan tried to pull away, but NIU's free throw shooting kept them in the game, cutting the lead to just one point with 12 seconds remaining.
In a tense final possession, Ducommun missed the initial shot, but Walters was there to tip it in at the buzzer, completing the remarkable comeback.
"Coach Burno told me to be a dawg on the boards," Walters said. "I didn't give up on the play, and when the rebound came, I knew it was game over."
Central Michigan, led by Nick Mullen and Nathan Claerbaut with 18 points each, had a strong start, leading by 12-11 early on. But the Huskies' resilience and determination ultimately prevailed.
The Huskies will now enjoy a well-deserved 10-day break before hosting Buffalo on December 30th. Will they continue their winning streak? Only time will tell.
